FARAH

Junior DPP axed from team

PUTRAJAYA: The Attorney-General’s Chamber has dropped a junior deputy public prosecutor from the prosecution team in the Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim sodomy trial following a report on her alleged affair with Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan, the complainant and chief witness.

Attorney-General Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail said Farah Azlina Latif had been removed from the eight-man team to prevent negative perception towards the prosecution team.

The decision, he said was also to protect the credibility of the team.

“I must stress that we take it (the allegation) seriously and there is no compromise whatsoever on matters of etiquette.

“This can be very difficult for us but any personal matter, if it can have any implication in whatever form on the department, will be handled very seriously,” he told a press conference at his office here yesterday.

Abdul Gani also said it did not matter whether the allegation was true.

“She has been dropped from the team and could possibly be moved from the prosecution division. She has yet to be informed and with due respect, I must immediately inform her after this (press conference),” he added.

The Malaysian Insider reported the allegation last week after fugitive blogger Raja Petra Kamaruddin alleged that a junior member of the prosecution team in Anwar’s trial was having an “affair” with Mohd Saiful.

Anwar’s lawyers yesterday demanded that the Attorney-General respond to Raja Petra’s claims saying that if the matter was left unaddressed, it could affect the ongoing trial which is set to resume on Aug 2.

The prosecution team for the case is headed by Solicitor-General 2 Datuk Mohd Yusof Zainal Abiden and assisted by deputy public prosecutors Datuk Nordin Hassan, Noorin Badaruddin, Mohamed Hanafiah Zakaria, Wong Chiang Kiat, Mira Mirna Musa, Naidatul Athirah Azman and Farah Azlina.

Abdul Gani said the Chamber had no qualms in dropping Farah Azlina as her role in the team was very minimal.

“To begin with, she was only roped in on Jan 20 to render general assistance, including taking notes of trial proceedings after another prosecutor Samsul Sulaiman went on retirement,” he said.

“She had no access at all to the investigation papers or any confidential information that the prosecution has. Whatever information she has, are those produced in court. She was never, at any point of time, involved in the discussion, strategy and preparation of the trial,” he added.
